Stand up Gheorghe, stand up Ion! *

No, not for a paddle of ruddy breadcrumb,
Not for the granaries, not for the acres
But for the free air, yours – of tomorrow
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

For your nation’s blood, flowing in channels,
For the sake of your song now pinned in the nails,
For tears of your sun, which has been put in chains,
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

Not for the anger gnashed between grinders.
To gather in whistling on plane and on hill
A hat full of distance, a hat full of dreams
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

Stand up for freedom, you’ll drink by the bucket,
To plunge in freedom of sky full of rapids,
To sleep in the flowers of apricot bloom
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

To touch everything with your sweet burning kiss,
All thresholds, all doorways, all stoops and all icons
All things that will freely appear in your way
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

Stand up now Gheorghe on chains and on ropes!
Stand up now Ion, on these holiest bones!
And high up, towards the storm’s light, that surges
Stand up now Gheorghe, stand up now Ion!

* The poet was sentenced to death in 1958 by the communist party, for this manifest-poem. The death penalty was commuted to 25 years of forced labor, of which he served 6. He was imprisoned between 1945-1956 also, for political reasons.
